When I watched your discussion concerning oppression within Deaf community, I gained a better understanding of what is happening within the community. If you may, I want to add few things related to this discussion. Since I am Deaf of Deaf parents and is parent of Deaf children, I begin to compare my experience with Deaf community and my association with hearing parents of deaf children (I am Bi-Bi Educator). My experiences show that several, if not all, hearing parents who wanted their deaf children to learn ASL likewise experience oppression by Listening and Spoken Language (AKA Auditory and Verbal Therapy). I could be wrong but my experiences indicated that some of oppressions felt by Deaf community is now spread and shared to those hearing parents of deaf children who wanted to be a part of Deaf culture, community and most of all, American Sign Language. Maybe we could look at them and see how we can hand some support and invite them to our Deaf community where appropriate? I felt it is possible that by including those hearing parents, we will have a louder voice in our cause.
