Hi Kim-

Thank you so much for making this vlog. I learned a lot and I understand your frustrations. I can't remmy if you live in rural area or city, but here in Maine it is the same idea. Boy, I dunno- no easy answers! I hope you get a good feedback from your project and I'd love to see it if you decide to share. Keep up your great work!- Debbie

some parents i know have Deaf children with another disability, like down syndrome or autism. FSDB refuse to allow these children into their school. maybe now they will. I have wanted my son, who is deaf and has down syndrome, to go to FSDB and they refuse to admit him. this is discrimination. my son uses sign language and I learned ASL because of him. He is limited but i felt he could learn better at FSDB but they say he is not high functioning enough. I heard some parents want to sue FSDB. I wont because i would not want to hurt them in that way. But I wish they would accept my son.

Fascinating! Thank you for sharing those wonderful insights. The Hebrew root Shin-Mem-Ayin not only refers to the ability to "hear", but more to the point, it includes the faculties of understanding, obedience, perception, paying attention, and other similar connections (Brown-Driver-Briggs, Hendrickson Publishers: Peabody, MA. 2000 (5th Printing); pp. 1033-1034). Thank you, Ellen!

When I watched your discussion concerning oppression within Deaf community, I gained a better understanding of what is happening within the community. If you may, I want to add few things related to this discussion. Since I am Deaf of Deaf parents and is parent of Deaf children, I begin to compare my experience with Deaf community and my association with hearing parents of deaf children (I am Bi-Bi Educator). My experiences show that several, if not all, hearing parents who wanted their deaf children to learn ASL likewise experience oppression by Listening and Spoken Language (AKA Auditory and Verbal Therapy). I could be wrong but my experiences indicated that some of oppressions felt by Deaf community is now spread and shared to those hearing parents of deaf children who wanted to be a part of Deaf culture, community and most of all, American Sign Language. Maybe we could look at them and see how we can hand some support and invite them to our Deaf community where appropriate? I felt it is possible that by including those hearing parents, we will have a louder voice in our cause.

excellent job DE
re: "the specialists" - here is what one of them stated in a custody case that ended up with the ruling being in favor of relatives having custody of a Deaf child over the Hearing mother who did not want the child to be implanted for worries about the affect of anesthesia as the child has various disabilities etc.

thankfully in a different ruling custody was granted back to the mother after the child had been implanted

its a complicated case but the things that jumped out at me were the mothers wishes not to have the child be implanted OVER RULED based on the custody decision and how the testimony of the SPECIALIST influenced the original unjust decision re: custody. ive put an excerpt from the "specialist" and the link to the full case below.

re: the child being late to school - it was noted that the relatives that originally won custody also delivered the child late to school too. Im just flabbergasted by how the "specialist" framed it and it is used and abused to actually diminish parental rights. dont even get me started on how so many of the folks who are "oral successes" still wish their family members signed but the SPECIALISTS told the family NOT to. u will still see that directive in the AG Bell components of auditory oral education - which Indiana Hear Say has a check list out about

thank u again DE

Farish testified that she had been C.J.'s teacher for nearly two years. She testified that C.J. was doing very well in school. She expressed concern that C.J. did not receive cochlear implants at a young age. Farish testified that children should wear the highest-level technology in hearing aids possible, which was cochlear implants. She stated that: "The amplification should be put on in the morning, worn all day, and other than taking a bath and going to sleep, then the amplification should be worn, and that's critical to letting the child develop the language and the speech skills 24 hours a day...." She went on to testify that "the rule of thumb with deaf education is that you get the best amplification as soon as possible, that the better the amplification, the better progress the child is going to make." Also, it is best to make use of the amplification "as soon as possible because you want to take maximum advantage of those earlier learning years." Regarding the excessive tardies, Farish testified that for the 2005-06 school year, C.J. was tardy thirty-five times. Farish testified that:
All children need to be in school the maximum amount of time, but for a hearing-impaired child ... it makes a difference in their outcome for life because you are not just teaching academics in a book. You are trying to equip the child with the social skills to speak and communicate.... [I]t is critical that he have as much time in the class as possible....
